FAA GUIDANCE DOCUMENT FOR UPSET RECOVERY TRAINING (URT)

On 1 Feb. 2011 the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Simulator Program Manager (NSPM) issued a Flight Simulator Training Device (FSTD) Qualification Guidance Bulletin 11-01 pertaining to a pending regulatory requirement for Upset Recovery Training (URT).

The guidance document is a consequence of a Public Law passed on 01 Aug. 2010 by the U.S. Congress requiring FAA to initiate rulemaking to require FAA Part 121 air carriers (U.S. scheduled Airlines) to:

  1. Provide crewmember training to recognize, or avoid and if not avoided, recover from the stall in a given make, model and series of aircraft.
  2. Recognize and avoid an upset of an aircraft or, if not avoided, to execute appropriate recovery from the upset in a given make, model and series of aircraft

A copy of the Guidance document can be found at http://www.faa.gov/about/initiatives/nsp/flight_training/bulletins/media/11-01.pdf
