About Us

In 1989 Brian Hampson saw that there was a need to assist the many new and existing simulator operators to understand the regulations and operational requirements of operating Flight Synthetic Training Devices (FSTD's - Flight Simulators). Having been heavily involved in the establishment of the, then, new regulations, he decided to contact Joe De Paola, Murph Morrison, the late Ed Booth, the late John Cowell, and Bob Earp, all personal friends that shared his insight and goals, and invited them to join with him to form Training Technology International Ltd. with the prime objective of providing superior quality simulation support.

At around the same time, we were approached by the JAA and ask to consider establishing a training course for regulators so that they would be better prepared to conduct evaluations of FSTD's to ensure they met the regulations and standards.  There was also a strong desire to convey the intent of the regulations as they were not made clear in the documentation, and who better to do this than a group of individuals who had been (and still are) heavily involved in the establishment of them.

These were the two primary goals of Training Technology International.

Over the years TTI has achieved these goals and in doing so we have helped many regulators, operators, manufacturers and other organizations from across the world. We specialize in consulting on the evaluation and qualification of FSTD's and also provide the only JAA approved and recommended FSTD Evaluators course. We have become accepted as the most experienced and knowledgeable organization in the field of FSTD evaluations and qualifications in the world. Attendance at one of our Evaluators Courses is often used as the standard requirement for regulators and operators who wish to evaluate FSTD.

The Principals of Training Technology International, Ltd. are based in Canada, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. As such, our team is fully conversant with all recognized international standards, providing superior simulator support.  We also have very close relationships with a number of associates: expert individuals in our industry who frequently help with the instruction, training program development, and consultancy services.

PROFESSIONAL HISTORIES AND EXPERIENCEThe TTI Team

Our professional qualifications range from flight operations management and aircraft/simulator evaluation and approval, through to aviation management, software and hardware engineering, occupational education and psychology, up to the professional level. Our practical qualifications range from organization start-up to full operational management.

We are all multi-faceted and cover all areas of FSTD design, performance and operations, but we specialize in specific areas, supporting each other as required. Our vast experience is frequently commented on during our courses, and having been in the simulator industry for so long also enables us to quickly liaise with other industry experts to get further information if required.

Brian Hampson - TTI's President and a Managing Partner, specializing in regulations.

Brian completed his aeronautical engineering training in the Royal Navy following this with service on both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. On leaving the RN he joined British Airways ( then B.O.A.C.) flying for some 27 years as a Flight Engineering Officer and then Instructor and Check Engineer. During the last 12 years of this service he became Operation Superintendent, Flight Simulators, in which position he was responsible for the operational fidelity of all BOAC and later BA simulators as well as for the procurement of new ones. He continued to fly whilst holding this position but upon retiring joined CAE to run their Evaluation Pilot Department. Later he moved to Project Engineering as the Manager and then Program Engineering. In 1992 he was given the role of Director of Operations Engineering which allowed him to become exceptionally active in forging JAR-STD and with the RAeS International Working Group the International Qualification test Guide from which the ICAO Manual of Criteria for the Qualification of Flight Simulators was derived. His successful Chairmanship of this task earned him the RAeS Silver Medal in 1992 and a full Fellowship of the RAeS. He had also been a major player with the late Ed Boothe (FAA National Simulator Program Manager) in the FAA Advanced Simulator Plan and the development of AC120-40 (Fixed wing FFS) & AC 120-63 (Rotary Wing FFS). In fact, I do not know of anybody more qualified in the FAA or JAA simulator regulations & he continues to be very active trying to improve both training & simulator quality in an economical manner threough the regulations.

Brian is a Member Emeritus of the RAes' Flight Simulation group of which he has been a member since its inception in 1970. He is currently Vice Chairman of the RAeS Steering Group that manages the International Working Group, tasked with revising simulator standards internationally and the development of the 3rd Edition of the ICAO Manual of Criteria for the Qualification of Flight Simulation Training Devices (MCQFSTD). This was published in 2009 in respect of Aeroplanes and he continues to oversee the production of the similar document in respect of Helicopters, due to be published by ICAO in 2011. He has also been appointed to the new International Committe for FSTD Qualification that will oversee future amendments to the MCQFSTD.

He heads up Training Technology International (TTI) which is a company that specializes in providing hands-on training for individuals involved in the evaluation and approval of flight simulators. Attendees to this professional course come from world wide, and some regulatory bodies use it as a qualification for all of their inspectors."

Joe DePaola - Joe DePaola – TTI Managing Partner and instructor on the FSTD Evaluators Course specializing in Visual Systems, Motion and Simulator Standards

Joe DePaola had a 28 year career with American Airlines where he was responsible for the procurement, acceptance and ongoing serviceability of the firm’s Flight Simulators, Visual Systems and other training devices. Joe retired from American Airlines in 1987 as Director Simulator Support.

Following retirement Joe represented American Airlines on FAA/Industry working groups formed to revise the FAA Advisory Circulars pertaining to Airplane Simulator and Flight Training Device Qualification. He is a past Chairman of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Flight Simulator Technical Sub-Committee. In 1990 he was elected Chairman of the Royal Aeronautical Society working group that developed and published an internationally recognized ICAO simulator qualification standard that formed the basis for the current JAR FSTD A & H documents and FAA Regulation Part 60. Other post retirement functions as an industry consultant included work for clients such as United Parcel Service Airline, SimuFlite Training, Evans & Sutherland Visual Systems and McDonnell Douglas Training Systems (US Military KC-10 and C-17 Programs).
